The Weight Loss Secret
Learn Why People Overeat
In the last year, I have discovered the weight loss secret that has helped me drop more than 100 lbs, marking the end of my lifelong battle with the bulge. And below I am going to share this secret. I'll also give you a simple way to conquer cravings using your mind and the power of positive thinking and positive self talk.
But first, I bet you're wondering...
Why Is The Weight Loss Secret A Secret?
If it works, why doesn't everyone know about it?
Here's the strange part: the weight loss secret isn't a secret because it's kept under tight lock and key. It's only a secret because most of us don't have the ability to absorb this information and act on it. We don't have the ears for hearing or the eyes for seeing it the way we need to hear and see it.
This quote by Marcel Proust perfectly captures what I'm trying to say here: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."
Trust me, all you need to know to permanently lose weight is in the paragraphs below. Journeying far and wide in search of more knowledge won't get you closer to your goal weight. Just read and re-read this information until you can see how it's true for you. Resolve now to hear it with new ears and read it with new eyes.
The Weight Loss Secret
The weight loss secret is this: most overweight people eat for emotional reasons, not for physical hunger.
Most people eat too much because they use food as a distraction. Overeating allows them to redirect their intense feelings and emotions into thinking obsessively about food and engage in repetitive behaviors like chewing and swallowing.
Imagine your emotions are like a delicate flame, burning at your core. Eating too much food is like throwing a blanket over the fire, trying to put it out. And high fat, high sugar snack foods work best to smolder the flames.
Not Buying The Weight Loss Secret?
If you don't think you're an emotional eater yet you constantly battle with your weight then think again. I fell for the same lie. I thought for many years that I wasn't that emotional at all. But this is never the truth. The reason many people mistakenly think they're not very emotional is that they use their addictions - work, alcohol, drugs and food to successfully block what they're feeling.
Emotions can seem scary to those of us who have worked so hard to block them. If you're like I was and you're out of touch with what you truly feel, you need to realize that emotions aren't nearly as scary as you think. They are like clouds in the sky - they come and go. And behind them is always a clear sky, even if dark clouds temporarily block the clarity from your view.
Exercise: To see how true this is, next time you have a craving ask yourself what you are feeling. And feel it. If you're angry, be angry. If you're sad, cry. And note how quickly the feeling then passes (followed by the craving!) While we're often afraid these feelings will never leave us, they always do. And quite quickly too.
Why People Overeat: Tell Tale Signs You Eat To Manage Your Emotions
-
You can polish off large servings of food without hardly realizing you've done so
- Cravings come on suddenly and intensely
- You crave high fat, high sugar and carb-rich foods
- You are always thinking about food
The truth is food works for you in the very short-term. It's a coping mechanism you've adopted to relieve you of the pressure of facing emotions you hate to feel like anger, disappointment, fear and regret.
The important thing to realize is that while overeating does have benefits for you in the short-term, in the long-term it's also costing you a lot, like happiness, fulfillment and personal growth and development.
And when you begin to realize that the long-term costs outweigh the short-term benefits, you'll find the motivation to end your food addiction once and for all.
The Connection Between Emotions And Overeating And The Power Of Positive Thinking
As you begin to finally feel your emotions you will face a lot of internal resistence. This usually manifests as feelings of discomfort, fear, anger and sadness.
But you must keep going. You can't give in to these emotions as they come up. And the power of positive thinking can really help.
Getting into the habit of practicing daily positive affirmations and positive visualization can be wonderful aids in helping you maintain momentum.
What also helps me is having a clear understanding of what's going on inside. From much self-analysis and reading, I have come to realize that whenever I feel afraid, it's just my ego talking. The ego's job is to preserve your existence. And the best way it's found to do this is to continuously recreate your past. It reasons that since you have survived yesterday, you can survive it again tomorrow. In order to keep on recreating the past in your life, it can often make you feel irrational fears that keep you stuck behaving like you did yesterday.
Knowing this, whenever I feel fear these days I ask myself: is this legitimate or is it just my ego talking? And if it's just my ego talking I turn to the power of positive thinking and positive self talk to give me the strength to make changes.
If you want to learn more about the weight loss secret I've shared here and how to overcome your emotional addiction to food, I suggest you check out Shrink Yourself. It's an online program created by psychiatrist Roger Gould. It taught me a lot of what I have relayed above and is the underlying reason why I have been able to lose 100 lbs for the first time in my entire life.
