What Is My Life Purpose?

Knowing Your Purpose

What is my life purpose? We all want to feel that we've been created for a purpose, that life has a bigger meaning than the mire of everyday routine.

And in search of that meaning we long for 'inspiration' to finally come. We expect it's like a sudden blinding flash of knowing. Where all is revealed and every last aspects of life just falls into place.

There is no question that synchronicity can occur when you go after your authentic desires. But knowing your purpose, waiting for inspiration to strike... that will most likely take a few lifetimes.

Choose Your Own Destiny

I subscribe to Viktor Frankl's view on destiny and fate and how you can go about knowing your purpose:

"Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible."

Frankl's message was astounding to me. The idea that I had a responsibility to determine how I would give myself to the world and create a truly meaningful life had never resonated before. I had truly believed that my destiny was pre-written. And I'd spent a lifetime trying in vain to uncover that destiny.

Frankl's view was a complete 180 degree turnaround for me.

The implications of changing my belief were big. I stopped waiting for inspiration to come. I realized I needed to energize myself and go out into the world and become what I desired. It would never just find me. If I continued looking for clues and signs, I could waste my whole life away... waiting.

What Frankl said is mirrored in Buddhist philosophy. what is my life purposeBuddhists believe that life is empty and meaningless, and while this sounds terribly morbid, it isn't. It simply means there is no objective meaning outside of you. Your life's meaning then is always and only what you decide it to be.

What is my life purpose is no longer a question that I long for the answer to! The answer lies within. Your purpose is that thing that you would do if you could do anything. We are all created for a purpose. But the purpose lies in your heart and only you can give it the breath of life to turn it into a reality.

Do You Believe In Destiny?

The idea that you need to invent your life's purpose now rather than waiting for inspiration to hit doesn't mean you can't believe in destiny. When you are doing what you do best in life, synchronicity definitely takes place. But unless you consciously move in the direction of what you're meant to be doing, destiny plays a weaker role than it otherwise could in your life.
